Puck off

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

I attended a Milwaukee Admirals game the other day.  The Admirals, for those of you who either a) don't live in Milwaukee, b) aren't hockey fans, or c) don't give a shit, are our local semi-pro hockey team.  I first went to a game about 10 years ago, and enjoyed myself somewhat, but not enough to come back regularly.  But that may soon change.

Why?

Well, there's a lot of action.  You gotta keep your eye on the puck, because that little hunk of plastic is flying around at insane speeds, caroming off walls, ice, and player's skulls.  It can easily come sailing over the glass and take out those nice choppers you bought and paid for at the dentist.

The level of action arguably exceeds all other team-based sports.  Football is great in short spurts.  Basketball is pretty non-stop, but the dribbling is non-stop as well, and that crap will give you a serious migraine.  Soccer's full tilt, but kinda...well...stupid.  Like basketball, those soccer dinks run around in shorts.  I don't wanna look at men's legs, so to hell with soccer.  Then there's baseball.  Don't get me wrong, I like baseball, but for the love of all that's holy, it's slooooooooooooooooooooooow.

But the action isn't restricted to the field of play.

There's also the fans.  These people are pretty ruthless.  I like it a lot. It started about halfway into the first period, after the Admiral's first score.   The crowd started taunting the opposing team's goalie.   This poor dumb bastard, Bishop, was just trying to do his job when the sections behind him started...

Bish-op...

Bish-op...

Bish-op...

YOU SUCK!

Imagine 2,000 people yelling that at you when you screw up at work.  Every time the Admirals scored on him, the crowd went after him.  It rocked.  Of course, the Admirals are doing quite well this season, and pretty much had their way with Bishop and his hopeless compatriots, so that probably lent much to the giddy atmosphere.  But it was sure fun.
