Zealot, Mock Thyself

Religion is a funny thing.  I don't consider myself to be a particularly religious person or have any strong personal convictions for or against the existence of God (by whatever name you wish to call Him or Her).  I find the generally accepted ideals - like not killing, stealing or bearing false witness - suit me just fine.  Peace and doing unto others are also quite alright.

But please, spare me from institutionalized religion, and all the nutjobs, zealots, and fruitcakes that invariably come with it.  The kind of people who will scream at their kids constantly but turn around and tell you you're a bad parent because you aren't married.  The ones who preach propriety and sanctity, only to be outed as child-molesters.  The ones who decry homosexuality, demonizing those who are homosexual - and are later found to be soliciting blowjobs in bathroom stalls - coming out of the closet in the most lurid way.  And the worst of all - those who kill in the name of their God - Christians and Muslims alike.

These all are the type to flaunt what "God" does to non-believers.  My Lady Friend recently received an email from an old high school friend which trumpeted the ways in which those who mocked God got their comeuppance.  They start off with a verse from the bible:

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked:
for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
- Galatians 6:7

Then it moves on to John Lennon, who, while not exactly Mother Teresa, was certainly all for peace and being good to his fellow man (what horrible traits, these!)

In 1966, John said:

"Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink.... I don't know what will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity. We're more popular than Jesus now. Jesus was all right, but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."

To which the email goes on to state:

Lennon, after saying that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ, was shot six times.

Well, that's not exactly what John said, but okay, fine.  So, are they suggesting the Lord "Thou Shalt Not Kill" God rewarded him with four bullets for that?  (Yes, it was only four, but that's plenty.)  Seems a bit incongruous to me.

There are several more claims made about various people, mostly unconfirmable beyond the fact they're actually dead now.  But then comes a mention of the Titanic - and, of course, the infamous quote:

"God himself could not sink this ship."
The quote is invariably attributed to Bruce Ismay (managing director of White Star Lines) or Captain EJ Smith, or some other crewman on the Titanic.  It has never been confirmed true.  But let's say, for the sake of argument that Bruce said it.  What's their point?  Some 1,500 people died when it went down.  Some of them were likely good christians.  What's the point in all those people reaping what one man "sowed".

I could go on, but what's the point?  Any reasonable person can see right through this rubbish.  It just annoys me these "religious" knuckleheads toss this stuff around as "proof" that they're right.  You know what?  You can worship whomever you like - just keep it out of my face.  In fact, the less you try to force it down my throat, the more inclined I am to believe you might have something there.
