Bottoms Down
Tuesday, October 4th, 2005There is this notion that Milwaukee is a beer-drinkin' town. It's true - to an extent - but there are some aspects of it that go against the common perception. Sure, there are bars on every other corner - in that respect, they have other towns licked. Sure, you can get a beer chaser with a Bloody Mary - without even asking for it. Yes, Miller brewery is here, even if it is owned by some South African conglomerate who manufactures similar products, such as shoes, furniture, and plate glass. And yet...
You can't buy alcohol after 9 PM? What the hell is that? Incentive to leave home at 8:59 and drive to the local 7-11 at a speed that would make Einstein faint? Surely you aren't going to suggest that I plan ahead. We're talking about BEER here. In AZ, and even FL, I could buy beer at all hours of the day and night. So whenever the mood struck, I could score a 40. (Okay, I'd never really buy a 40, but you get the idea.)
And another thing: there seems to be very few gas stations that sell beer. In the past month, I've been stymied at least a half-dozen times - wandering about a local Shell or BP wondering whereinthehellisallthedamnbeer? Again - AZ and FL - friggin' EVERYWHERE. Hell, they even had drive-thru liquor stores. Not here. You'd think, in a "beer-drinkin'-state", that you'd be able to buy beer anywhere - even at McDonald's. Or Payless Shoes.
I may have to take matters into my own hands. Call my state representative. Form a political action committee. Run for office. And buy my own damn bar.
